Given that |x + 1| + (y + 2)2 = 0
Sum of an absolute value & a perfect square value can be equal to 0 only when each of these terms is equal to 0.
∴ |x + 1| = 0
x = − 1
And (y + 2)2 = 0
y + 2 = 0
y = −2
Putting the values of x and y in the equation, ax − 3ay
= 1, we get
a (− 1) − 3a (− 2) = 1
− a + 6a = 1
a = 1/5
